Welcome to Earth Month! Today we’re finding out why “Cruelty-Free” cosmetics is the topic on everyone’s lips – and what it means, really. Helping us navigate, Carlene and Jill are joined by expert blogger Suzana Rose – aka Cruelty-Free Kitty – whose watchdog blog has earned upwards of 600K page views per month, and has been featured in ByrdieRefinery29, and BBC. Plus, Dr. Carol Treasure hits us with some scientific realness. She’s the founder and CEO of the UK-based XCellR8, an ethical testing lab devoted to 100% animal-free testing for leading cosmetic companies and ingredient suppliers.

Listen in as we cover the fundamentals of what constitutes cruelty-free beauty, and the big head-scratcher: why some beauty companies might still be animal-testing today. Plus, we unpack the latest headlines you may have seen around China’s Animal Testing Laws coming into effect May 1st, 2021. Stay tuned until the end to find out which logos you can really trust when you’re shopping (like, does a Bunny on a label suffice?) along with a few of our guests’ personal cruelty-free faves.

Meet the fastest growing hair care brand at Sephora: Briogeo. Today we’re chatting with its brilliant founder, Nancy Twine, a University of Virginia graduate and Goldman Sachs alum. As a woman of colour, she couldn’t understand why there wasn’t any natural, non-toxic haircare on the market for all ethnicities and hair textures under one brand. Having whipped up DIY beauty products using avocado oils and coconut butters with her mother and grandmother as a child, clean beauty was also top of mind. She blended the two ideas, and in 2013, Briogeo was born.

Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask

But why leave that high paying Wall Street job to begin with? In this episode, Nancy reveals the heart-breaking moment that caused her to re-evaluate everything in her life. She also shares a funny story about a surprising connection she has to Kelly Clarkson. And in the spirit of true #girltalk, we get her personal tips on blow-drying her hair in under 12 minutes, and the one product she made that pretty much broke the internet.

Jill and Carlene weigh in on why Briogeo’s best-selling Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask is truly a dream for dry, damaged hair. (Super influencers Hannah Bronfman and Ingrid Neilsen are fans of the brand.) Finally, Nancy explains which 6 ingredients you’ll never find in any of her formulations. And we don’t let her go without getting all the deets on why hair supplements are what she’s conquering next – coming this fall.

Meet today’s version of the scrunchie, the Invisibobble! But you probably don’t need an introduction, you probably have one in your hair right now. Or maybe your daughter is wearing one of the telephone cord-looking hair holders, or your spin instructor, or that cute girl with the loose bun across the subway aisle. Last year, four million units of Invisibobble were sold worldwide, that’s eight spiral thingys per minute.

Now meet the inventor of Invisibobble, Sophie Trelles-Tvede, who was an 18-year-old university student when she dreamed up the idea, fresh from a dorm party (been there!). The co-founder approached her friend, Felix Haffa, and with their combined savings of $4,000, launched a massive beauty brand. But just how did their ages work to their advantage? You may be surprised to hear that social media had zero to do with it. You might also enjoy hearing about the time that their ages definitely did not work in their favour during one of their early business deals (don’t worry, they got theirs).

Today, Trelles-Tvede has been featured in Forbes 30 Under 30, and she has given TedxTalks on how to trade in four years-worth of red bull-vodkas to start a small business (that quickly grew humungous.) Armed with their tagline, “That Simple”, Invisibobble is already in every girl’s ponytail, and they’re not stopping there. Find out in this episode how the beauty brand is planning to re-invent another oldie but goodie hair staple (hello, SATC fans!) this spring—and even more smart solutions, revealed!
